Page Layout Assignment

The Page Layout Assignment lets you assign which, if any, page layout for an object a user in that profile will see.

Permissions are required to work in the Setup.

This is where you assign specific page layouts to a profile.  When an object is created, it is created with one or more page layouts.  A page layout is simply the information that is chosen for display and how it is arranged.  This is what a user sees when viewing an objects records and their details.  For each object you can assign one page layout for that object to a profile.  This determines the what a user in that profile will see.  The default layout for an object will automatically be assigned

For example, the Customer object has two page layouts, one called Customer_Sales and the other Customer_Accounting.  Each page layout shows different information about the customer.  When creating the profiles Accounting, the Customer_Accounting layout is assigned, and for the Sales profile the Customer_Sales layout is assigned.  When members (Users) of the Sales profile look at the records for the Customer object, they will see them and their information as displayed in the Customer_Sales layout.
